What To Include in Fall Photo Books

Celebrate fall with an unforgettable photo book by incorporating these ideas. You can mix and match or put them in this order, or choose a pre-designed fall photo book layout or holiday photo book that guides you to include:

1. Pumpkin patch visits

2. Fall home decor

3. Halloween spreads

4. Fall recipes

5. Gratitude sections

Here's a closer look at each idea to inspire you.

Pumpkin Patch Visits

Whether you're collecting photos from this year's trip to the pumpkin patch or going for a then-and-now spread, it's a great idea to add a section about choosing the perfect pumpkin. Sprinkle in pony rides and hayrides, corn maze snapshots, and other fall adventures to make this part of your book exceptionally memorable. Check out these pro tips for getting the best pictures at a pumpkin patch:

•   Shoot in the best lighting, which typically occurs in the early morning (before 10 a.m.) and just before sunset. And don't let the clouds get you down - overcast days can provide soft light, which means the subjects of your photos won't be squinting in every picture.

•   Bring wet wipes on your trip to the pumpkin patch. That way, you can clean up sticky hands and faces so your kids are always camera-ready.

•   Use burst mode on your camera. That way, when you head home and start going through your pictures, you can pick the best shot. (Your phone may have a motion photo setting, too, which provides similar results.)

•   Take candid shots and posed photos. You'll be able to capture all the special moments that way!

•   Don't be afraid to shoot at kid-level and play with angles while you're taking photos. Squat at the bottom of the slide with the camera to wait for your child. Lay on your stomach as your little ones navigate a corn maze, or put your child on top of a hay bale and aim up.

Fall Home Decor

If you style your home for fall, showcase your skills with a fall home decor section. Capture your front porch's fall look, complete with pumpkins and fall flowers, and snap professional-looking photos of your home's interior, as well. Other great decorative elements to photograph include:

•   A crackling fireplace with fall-themed decor on the mantel

•   Setup for a fall party

•   Lanterns or string lights

•   Your backyard living area

Pro Tip: Include kids and pets in some of your fall home decor photos to make the memories richer.

Halloween Spreads

When you go big for Halloween, you need photos to showcase all your hard work. You can set up a two-, four- or six-page Halloween spread in the middle of your book to highlight kids' costumes and trick-or-treating experiences, as well as photos of the Halloween decor you painstakingly put up.

Check out these tips for getting great Halloween photos for your fall photo book:

•   Have your little ones act like the characters they're dressed to be. If you have a little superhero on your hands, capture photos of her running around to save the day; if you have a knight, have him draw his sword. You get the idea!

•   Don't make everything about the costumes. Take photos of pumpkin carving and let the artists pose with their finished pieces.

•   Make time to get photos of your family pets, in or out of costume. A cute cat sniffing a carved pumpkin and a precious pooch wearing a costume, scarf, or hat is equally cute.

•   Aim for close-ups of your costumed friends and family. Most people only take wide shots that include the entire costume, but headshots and other close-ups look great in fall photo books.

Fall Recipes

No fall memory book is complete without your favorite fall recipes. Scan in handwritten recipes passed down through generations or type up the mixes you use every year. Whether you make butternut squash soup, pumpkin pie, cinnamon donuts, or apple cider cocktails, you can preserve the recipes for future generations by including them in your fall photo book. If you're really feeling inspired, set your camera or phone up on a tripod while you're in the kitchen making your family's favorites; use the timer to capture stills of you, your family, and friends cooking to include opposite the recipes. (And naturally, you'll want photos of the finished product - both before and while everyone's enjoying it!)

Gratitude Sections

Compile notes of gratitude from your family and friends; anyone who's important to your family should have something to say. Have your loved ones hand-write what they're grateful for, then use a scanner to convert them into files you can include in your fall photo book. They'll look great as a collage or as additions spread across multiple pages.

Alternatively, you can take photos of the notes themselves. To really knock this one out of the park, choose a beautiful fall-themed stationery set or fall-themed cardstock of varying sizes. Then, ask your loved ones to write what they're most grateful for using fall-colored pens (such as rich reds, burnt orange, or brown). Get the best results when photographing handwritten cards by following these steps:

•   Set up two lamps, equal distances apart, on a fall-themed tablecloth.

•   Place the card directly between the two lamps.

•   Aim the lens of your camera or phone at the center of the card. Take the photo from a place above the lights - that way, your equipment won't cast a shadow on the subject.

You can even choose leaf cut-outs or real leaves as your medium.
