While pink and red make for great Valentine’s Day decorations, and Pin the Arrow on the Heart is a fun game for a few minutes, we’re big fans of making Valentine’s Day parties a bit more creative – and appropriate for both boys and girls. Here are our three favorite ideas for a modern love-day celebration… Pizza My Heart Party Invite friends over for heart-shaped pizza making! Put out red toppings like tomato sauce, sliced tomatoes, red bell peppers and pepperoni. You can even cut slabs of mozzarella into heart shapes, or create hearts with olives and arrows with pepper slices. For dessert, make a sweet pizza covered with chocolate and strawberries. During the pizza-making, simply play every cheesy love song known to man, and encourage plenty of lip-synching. For another fun moment, have guests guess how many sweetheart candies are in a jar, and gift the person who gets closest a pizza-making kit or a basket of Valentine’s Day treats.

Love is a Battlefield Party Host a party that features a fast-paced field game like Capture the Flag or Spud. That’ll get everyone’s hearts racing, then round up your little heartbreakers for a snack that’s on-theme. If you’re having the kids play Capture the Flag, you might set out trays of cheese squares and cherry tomatoes skewered onto flag-topped toothpicks. And if you’ve had the kids play Spud, you can serve up baskets of French fries or set up a baked-potato bar. Decorate with little soldier figures and plenty of hearts, and send kids home with a bag of toy soldiers mixed up with heart-shaped candy. Secret Admirer Party Tap into the unique allure of the secret admirer with a party that’s all about disguise. As a party activity have guests play a Valentine version of Who Am I? Simply pick one name for each person playing and stick that name on each person’s back or forehead. Each person gets 20 yes-or-no questions to find out who they are. To create the Valentine theme, simply choose famous heartthrobs popular with your group of guests. After the game, have people pose in a DIY photo booth using classic disguise-themed props from masks and mustaches to hats and sunglasses. Print out pics to send home with friends, or create Mixbook minibooks that guests will get just long enough after the party that they generate some fun anticipation.
