7 Unexpected Save the Date Ideas
Here at Mixbook, we’re not hopeless romantics. No way. We would not fall into that trap. We’re hopeful romantics—a much more acute condition. We’re in the camp that says, hey, if you’re smitten enough to get married, shout if from the rooftops! And there’s no better time to do that then just before you get down to the serious business of planning your wedding. Before the formal invitation to follow, let that sparkling feeling of unfettered joy bubble over. We’ve gathered a few fun ways to plan a photo shoot that’ll inspire seven anything-but-boring save the date ideas that capture your moment of bliss. Friends and family members will love sharing in your happiness—and clearing their calendars for your upcoming celebration.
1. Dream Team

If you and your future spouse love spectator sports, don your team jerseys and go in for a winning kiss. Have your photographer snap a shot while you hold a prop in the foreground that displays the big date. Another save the date card idea for superfans: have custom jerseys made with your wedding date printed as player numbers. Instead of last names, print “save” on one and “the date” on the other. Hold the shoot at your favorite stadium, ballpark, or arena.
2. Strings Attached

For a sweet photo with meaning, have your photographer take a shot in a significant place—the spot where you said “yes” or the place where you first met. Bring along a ribbon hung with cutout numbers so your big date can be suspended between you mid-kiss.
3. Initial Love

We love the drama of giant cutout letters in the midst of a simple shot. Cut your first initials and a big heart out of cardboard, then paint them with your favorite colors. Create a calendar icon using cardboard, stencils, and your big date. Hold the photo shoot in a wide-open field to let your props do the talking.
4. Love Lesson

Turn to the chalkboard to teach guests a few things, like where to be on your wedding day. Do a series of shots and choose a Mixbook template that creates a collage of love notes and that all-important date. Or use a chalkboard scrawled with the word “love” as a prop in a series of photos that feature you and your betrothed doing some of the things you love most. Another chalkboard idea: write your wedding date on a small chalkboard, then hide behind it and smooch away. Your shot will be sweet, fun, and informative too!

Create a rustic wooden sign painted with your names signpost-style. Hold it up on a favorite pathway or hike. Or simply use poster board to draw your wedding date in bold black on white, then have your photographer snap a romantic picture. Remember to take advantage of early-morning or magic-hour light to really make a shot like this shine.
6. Letter Perfect

Get all decked out in your favorite hipster clothes, with a focus on snazzy saddle shoes and peep-toes. Place fabric letters that spell out “save the date” in the grass at your feet, then have your photographer snap a photo that focuses on the words, but captures you and your fiancé holding hands. For an easy beachside alternative, switch out shoes for flip-flops, and write your date in the sand.
7. Your Timeline
If you just want to use a simple shot of you and your fiancé, consider choosing a save the date card template that has the whimsy built in. Plug in your smiling faces to the Mixbook Our Timeline card, and share the first half of your love story.
